Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)

TMJ, is relevant within neuromuscular dentistry, it relates to the joint that connects your jaw to your skull allowing your jaw to move freely so that you can eat, laugh and talk.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder is the term used when your teeth and jaw are out of their correct alignment, causing a variety of significant oral and general health problems.

Problems with this joint can result in headaches and migraines. A misaligned jaw can cause the TMJ to become inflamed, causing muscle spasms, which in turn tighten up the muscles in the face, neck and shoulders. Further, pressure may affect the nerves around the joint causing a shooting pain around the ear and head.

TMJ

Consider the following:

  • Do you suffer from recurring headaches or migraines?
  • Do you grind your teeth?
  • Are your teeth and jaw out of perfect alignment?
  • Do you suffer from facial, neck and shoulder pain?
  • Do you have a clicking jaw?
  • Do you have limited jaw movement?

When your jaw is out of alignment it can cause any or all of these above symptoms; all clear indicators of suffering from TMJ.

Fresh Dental Care will often take a conservative approach when treating TMJ pain. For some people, TMJ disorders are only temporary and as such simple treatment methods are the most appropriate and effective. A treatment plan may consist of one or more of the following methods:

  • Bite plates
  • Night guards
  • Cold or warm packs
  • Relaxation massages
  • Diet management
  • Stress management
  • Medication

If you’re suffering from TMJ, schedule a consultation today. Our friendly team are more than happy to help find you a solution.
